Electribe EA1 and BlipBox
April 14, 2009
A couple of days ago a Korg Electribe EA1 arrived in the post. This little box sounds fantastic, and is so much fun! The tweakability factor is enormous.
What makes it even more fun is controlling the synth parameters with the BlipBox. To achieve this the MIDI implementation of the BlipBox software had to be updated to send NRPN messages as well as standard CC. A most useful feature for interfacing with any MIDI equipment that relies on NRPN, furthermore it allows for 14-bit parameter values unlike the regular CC range of 0-127 (7 bits).
Here’s a short video of the two in action.

How are you plugging the blipbox into the EA1? What sort of cable are you using?

The BlipBox currently has only one connection: USB to computer. The computer is connected to the Korg through a Midi interface, and a dedicated application does the routing between the two boxes.
I’m planning to add an optional Midi out connection to the BlipBox, so that once it’s configured you will not have to plug it into a computer. This should be possible to do with the current PCBs by plugging in a different serial connection board which handles both USB and Midi. And power, since it would no longer be USB bus powered.
